Snap and Tilt: Early Barrel Depth Behind the Shoulder
ProSwing App Metric: Early On-Plane Distance, Barrel Depth Index
How the move works
Depth buys time. You drop the rear shoulder into side-tilt and you swivel the top wrist in one move. The barrel lands on pitch plane behind you, then it stays there.
You enter plane 8 to 12 inches behind the body. You hold plane through an 18-inch zone. Hitters with early depth track longer and mishit less.
Youth cue: Slide and dip
You dip your back shoulder like a playground slide. You flip the barrel onto that slide behind you. Then you ride the slide straight at the ball.
High school and college read
You read Early On-Plane Distance and Barrel Depth Index. You pass when plane entry lands 8 to 12 inches behind the rear shoulder and on-plane feet hold through contact. Attack angle targets sit at 5 to 15 degrees by profile.
Parent and coach setup
You use a tee set at mid-thigh. You watch shoulder tilt from the front. You stop the set when the front shoulder pulls up or the head drops below the start line.
Step-by-Step Execution
- Load deep: You load into your rear hip with hands set at the corner.
- Tilt: You drop your rear shoulder into side-tilt toward your back hip to establish pitch plane angle.
- Swivel early: You simultaneously swivel your top wrist to enter the hitting plane 8 to 12 inches behind your body.
- Stay flat: You drive the barrel through a deep 18-inch hitting zone flat to the pitch trajectory.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
| Flaw | HLP Fix |
|---|---|
| Rear shoulder stays level, barrel works down late | You drop the rear shoulder toward the back hip and you match pitch plane early. |
| Hands cast out past the back foot | You swivel the top wrist behind the shoulder and you keep the arc tight. |
| Barrel enters the zone beside the body | You set plane 8 to 12 inches behind the body before you drive forward. |
| Swing cuts short across the front hip | You drive the barrel flat through a full 18-inch zone to the pitcher. |
ProSwing App Callout
You record 5 tee swings from the side at waist level. You read Barrel Depth Index and Early On-Plane Distance in ProSwing Studio. You pass when entry lands 8 to 12 inches behind the body and the barrel holds plane through the tee. You add more side-tilt when entry lands beside the hip.
