The Anti-Lunge: Stop Reaching with Your Hands
ProSwing App Metric: Forward Weight Drift, Spine Angle Stability
How the move works
Lunging kills bat speed. You slide forward, the head moves, and the hands run out of room. You fix the lunge by moving the lower half without moving the head.
You stay coiled over the rear hip like a tetherball pole while the lead foot floats and lands. You keep max distance between the hands and the front hip. That stretch stores the turn.
Youth cue: Whack-a-Mole head
You lock your head like the Whack-a-Mole head that stays put. Your feet move under you. Your head never chases the pitcher.
High school and college read
You read Forward Weight Drift and Spine Angle Stability in your report. You pass when the head marker moves less than 2 inches from load to foot plant and the spine angle holds inside your baseline band.
Parent and coach setup
You stand side-on with a clear view of the head and chest. You call out head movement the instant you see it. You keep early sets to dry reps with no ball.
Step-by-Step Execution
- Load first: You assume your loaded stance with the lead foot slightly hovering.
- Feel the pole: You feel like a coiled tetherball pole anchored over your rear hip axis.
- Stride soft: You stride forward softly onto your front toe without letting your head or chest drift forward over your front knee.
- Hold the stretch: You maintain maximum distance between your hands and your front hip to preserve stretch and separation.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
| Flaw | HLP Fix |
|---|---|
| Head and chest slide over the front knee | You freeze the head over the rear hip and you land on the front toe. |
| Hands push at the pitcher during stride | You keep the hands back at the rear shoulder and you let the legs move first. |
| Stride lands long and loud | You shorten the stride and you land soft enough to hear the toe tap. |
| Back side collapses at foot plant | You keep the rear knee pinched and you hold the coil into landing. |
ProSwing App Callout
You record side-profile video at waist level, open side of the hitter. You log 5 hover-and-stride reps. You read Forward Weight Drift in ProSwing Studio. You pass when the head marker stays inside a 2-inch box through foot plant. You shorten the stride when the trace slides toward the pitcher.
